Understanding GST in India

Goods and Services Tax (GST)is India's landmark unified indirect tax regime introduced in 2017, replacing a fragmented system of central and state taxes including VAT, service tax, and excise duty. GST follows a dual structure — Central GST (CGST) collected by the Union Government and State GST (SGST) collected by State Governments on intra-state supplies, while Integrated GST (IGST) applies to inter-state transactions.

Businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for service providers) must register under GST and file regular returns. Understanding how to calculate GST accurately is essential for invoicing, pricing, and compliance.

How to Add or Remove GST from a Price

There are two common scenarios when working with GST calculations:

  • Adding GST (Exclusive Price): When you have the base price before tax, GST Amount = Base Price × (Rate ÷ 100). Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount.
  • Removing GST (Inclusive Price): When you have the MRP or total price including GST, Base Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). GST Amount = Total Price − Base Price.

Our calculator handles both scenarios instantly, showing you the complete CGST, SGST, and IGST breakdown based on whether your transaction is intra-state or inter-state.

Questions & Answers

What is GST and how is it calculated?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes. GST is calculated as: GST Amount = Base Amount × (GST Rate / 100). The total price inclusive of GST = Base Amount + GST Amount.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are levied on intra-state transactions — each is half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) is levied on inter-state transactions and equals the full GST rate. For example, at 18% GST on an intra-state supply: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%. On an inter-state supply: IGST = 18%.

What are the GST rate slabs in India?

India has five main GST rate slabs: 0% (essential goods like food grains), 5% (basic necessities), 12% (processed foods, business class air travel), 18% (most goods and services, restaurants), and 28% (luxury goods, sin goods like tobacco and aerated drinks). Special rates apply for gold (3%) and rough precious stones (0.25%).
